A practice, not an agency.
Founded and led by Marquerite, brand strategist, in Stellenbosch. Built around continuity rather than capacity — a short client list, held for years.
The Brand Bureau is a senior-led brand practice working with a small number of owner-led businesses in the Western Cape. Its foundation is luxury retail — a category where perception is the product — across international and local brands. It takes a business from positioning through identity, website and ongoing marketing, and then holds it.
Why it is built this way
Most brand work fails in the gap between the strategy and the execution. A consultancy writes the position and leaves; an agency executes without owning the thinking; somewhere between the two the idea gets diluted by people who were not in the room when it was decided.
This practice closes that gap by keeping one senior hand across the whole arc. The position I write is the position I then design against, build the website against, and hold the monthly marketing to. Nothing is lost in handover, because there is no handover.
The trade-off is deliberate: a short client list, held properly, rather than a long one held loosely. That is why the work page is brief and why it changes slowly.
Who else is involved
Specialists, where the work calls for them. Photographers and videographers, printers, interior designers and project managers — people I have worked alongside for years, chosen for the job rather than kept on a payroll, briefed against the same written position and held to the same standard.
The interior designers and project managers matter more than they might sound. For a property fund or a guesthouse, the brand is not only what appears on a screen: it is the building, the entrance, the room. Being able to reach into that is the difference between a brand that is described consistently and one that is actually experienced that way.
This is how a small practice covers the range without diluting it. You are never paying for capacity you are not using, and never briefing someone who has not read the strategy. What does not change, on any engagement, is who is accountable for the whole of it.
What luxury retail taught me
In luxury retail, the product and the perception of the product are not separable. The same object is worth one figure in one context and five times that in another, and the difference is entirely constructed — by positioning, by environment, by consistency held over decades.
That is an unusually honest training ground. It makes it obvious that brand is a commercial instrument, not a decorative one, and it makes the discipline of consistency feel less like pedantry and more like the whole job.
Applied to a property fund or a family office or a seven-room guesthouse, the principle does not change. Only the vocabulary does.
How clients work with the practice
Directly, and usually for a long time. Engagements begin with a defined piece of work — a position, an identity, a website — and most continue as a monthly retainer once the foundation is in place, because a brand that nobody is holding drifts within a year.
Everything the practice produces for you is documented and yours: the position, the guidelines, the assets, the accounts. Nothing is held hostage in one person’s head or one agency’s file server, and nothing is stranded if circumstances change.
You will also be told when the problem is not a brand problem. Sometimes what looks like weak positioning is a pricing question, an operations question, or a business selling to the wrong people. Naming that costs a project and saves a year.
